BDA has conducted competitive
assessments for numerous state
and local economic development
agencies to understand how businesses
making investment decisions perceive
client locations relative to other
locations. These analyses are
used to set policy priorities,
select target industries, and
improve economic development services.
BDA has also developed cost models to determine the estimated operating
costs for manufacturing, distribution, and office operations in client
communities nationwide, including comparative analyses to demonstrate
competitive position in the marketplace. BDA advises clients on the
implications of the cost analysis, effective use of the models for
marketing, and how the cost models are used in the corporate site
selection process.
Representative projects include:
- Updated a ten-year
old assessment of site selection
assets and liabilities and
prepared a comparative cost
analysis for an economic development
organization in a major southwestern
city. Explained how its competitive
position had changed over
the decade and discussed implications
for business attraction efforts.
Completed a current competitive
analysis with an updated list
of competitor locations, with
an emphasis on understanding
the relative strengths of
new economic drivers in the
client community. Analysis
used to guide program development
and to identify industries
suitable for near-term attraction
efforts.
- Prepared a Regional
Assets Analysis for a new
multi-county regional economic
development organization.
Collected, for the first time,
economic and demographic data
for the region as a whole.
Assessed region-wide strengths
and weaknesses from the site
seeker perspective. BDA then
conducted a competitive assessment
for the region against comparably
sized metropolitan areas to
determine its relative advantages
for business attraction and
development.
- Conducted a
market assessment for a local
economic development agency
to help the community excel
in its ability to meet the
needs of its target industries.
Provided detailed analyses
of labor, taxes, incentives,
site availability and quality,
and development processes
among the client's competitors.
Developed recommendations
to address lagging factors.
